The Red Hen

Gift Certificates in July

When you purchase any Che! Collection item between now and July 31st, your name can be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate of your choice.  At least two people (more based on participation) will have to decide if they would like a $25 gift certificate to the locally-owned business of their choice or a $40 gift certificate to The Red Hen.  We will draw names after closing on the 31st.  What are you waiting for?  Come see what the fuss is about!  And remember to tell us to enter your name in the drawing — this is a special Special especially for all of you Blog readers.

Che Collection

Che!, a children's clothing company, was started by a woman from Argentina who lives here in Chapel Hill with her family.  Carried by boutiques all over this country as well as in Argentina and Europe, the pieces in this collection are simply lovely.  All handcrafted by artisans in Argentina, they radiate a special elegance and charm.  Orchestrating designers, artisans, and  retailers across the globe is quite a feat for a mother of three though and the decision was made to cease operations.  When she contacted me about purchasing her remaining inventory, I looked at her website and was very interested.

The photos on the website are very good, but the clothing is fabulous in person — such pleasing designs, textures, colors, embellishments, and handiwork.  Hand-painted wooden buttons, satin ribbon trim, and beautiful smocking are a few of the elements that adorn these items.  The one-of-a-kind, Saltenian embroidery is amazing.  Some of the pieces were designed with personalization in mind and are perfect for monogramming.  (Ask about our new embroidery service.)  There is also a hand-knit line with very special pieces of excellent quality that exhibit exquisite attention to detail.  We have most of the merchandise shown on their website in a variety of sizes.  These are current items from their Spring and Fall '08 lines.

We know that these pieces will find special homes through The Red Hen and we have priced them at a fraction of what they normally sell for.  (Here is a link to a high-end, online boutique that is currently still selling their Che! merchandise.  Our prices are insanely low!) This is an amazing opportunity and we are thrilled to offer it to our customers.

I promise that these photos do not do this clothing justice, but we want you to see a sampling of what we have.

Unusual Baby Beds

When my first child was about four or five months old (and I was completely delirious from lack of sleep) I saw a ghodiyu at a friend's house.  It was at the foot of her bed and was beautiful with dark wood and luscious looking fabrics.  I asked about it and she explained that her baby (same age as mine) slept in it.  It was the one she slept in as a baby and her parents shipped it to her when her first child was born.  It is essentially a hammock on a frame and looked very comfortable.  The thing that really got my attention was how she could rock the baby while she laid in bed by pulling a cord attached to the hammock.  I fantasized about that for a long time; I only knew how to rock the baby while upright!

When this Amby Baby Bed came into the store I immediately thought of that ghodiyu.  Here is the blurb from their webpage:

Amby Baby Motion Bed

Helping your baby sleep better, longer

"Finally, a solution for your fussy baby! The Amby Baby Motion Bed helps babies and parents get the sleep they need with it’s womb-like design and gentle motion that babies love. Endorsed by Dr. Sears, the Amby Baby beds are specially helpful for babies with reflux(GER), colic and even preemies."

This Amby looks amazing and I wonder if it has even been used.  The Amby Motion Bed Infant Package (this one has all of those features) is listed on their website for $253.  Our price is $165 and a quick search of eBay and Craiglist will turn up even higher prices for used units.  Have a look at the benefits and features on their website and see what you think.

Now I know there isn't really anything unusual about a bassinet or cradle.  But this one from Eddie Bauer is a nice combination.  When I saw it I had that "Aw, a sweet baby bed" feeling.  (Where does that come from anyway? the movies?)  The combination of wood and bassinet fabric is pleasing and this one is in pristine condition.

This bed can be found new at several locations.  Here is a Babies R Us link for more information.

Retail $139
The Red Hen $80

P.S.  I found this photo on the internet.  This ghodiyu is much simpler looking than the first one I saw.  Do they make them for adults . . . I am again delirious from lack of sleep and have another 5 month old!!!  But if I am in the hammock - how will I rock myself???

Happy Scrappy Balls

Greetings to all our Hen Friends!  I am honored to be the first Red Hen staff member to post on our new blog!  If you are in the store on Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoon, you'll find me helping customers, handing out stickers to busy little ones, and doing my best to keep up with buying.  I have been working at the store for more than a year and have had a great time getting to know the customers!

DeeDee has kindly asked me to post a bit about the Happy Scrappy Balls that I have created and are now available EXCLUSIVELY at the Red Hen.  As an on-again, off-again quilter, I have been drawn to the wonderful variety of fabrics used for childrens' clothing.  There are so many textures, embellishments, colors and prints that attract my eye and are so soft to the touch!

Many of you are already familiar with our buying process, and how we offer our customers the opportunity to donate the clothing that we are unable to accept to Welcome Baby of Durham.  My co-worker Grada takes many, many bags of childrens' and maternity clothing to Welcome Baby every week.  I occasionally take a few pieces home, cut, sew, and voila!  A Happy Scrappy Ball is born.  I do my best to pay attention to color and texture so that each ball is a multi sensory experience, with lush velour, bumpy seersucker, scratchy wool, or whatever else strikes my fancy.  A rattle is embedded inside the polyfill stuffing, and in the future I may use jingle bells as well.

I love doing my part to "reduce, reuse, recycle" and I hope one of my Happy Scrappy Balls makes its way to your child's hands!

Foamy Soap or Soapy Foam???

We are thrilled to add these new liquid soaps to the list of products we carry from MoonDance Soaps & More.  They started by creating their own organic, vegetable oil based castille liquid soap in two scents: Creamy Dreamy Lavender and Sunshiny Citrus Zing.  Then they found a pump dispenser that mixes in a bit of air.  Voila!  Foamy & Soapy! As usual, the scents are heavenly and one pump does it all.  Economical and environmentally friendly — does it get any better?

$6.00 Pump
$8.00 Concentrate (will refill pump 4 times!)

"Ingredients: Distilled water; saponified organic coconut, olive and jojoba oils; vegetable glycerin; organic aloe vera; lavender essential oil; fragrance; rosemary oleoresin extract (a natural antioxidant).

Rainy Day Special

Are you as excited about our new Rainy Day Special as we are???

If you are — come and tell us!!!

The first five people to come to the store (BEFORE it rains again) and tell us, "I can't wait for it to RAIN!" will WIN a gift certificate of your choice ($20—The Red Hen or $10—Weaver Street Market or $10—Katie's Pretzels).

Here are the details of our Rainy Day Special:

If it is actively raining when you start shopping at The Red Hen, you will be able to choose one letter from our Alphabet Jar. Then be as creative as possible to find things that start with the letter you chose and receive 15% off those items. For example, if you choose the letter "P", here are some things that would qualify: anything with a brand that began with "P" (Peg Perego, Patagonia, etc), anything purple, pacifiers, pack-n-plays, etc. Everyone chooses their own letter from the jar and then it is up to you to be creative!
